Global stacking of broadband seismograms

Abstract:

The rapidly expanding archive of three-component broadband data from the Global Seismic Network (GSN) now makes it possible to image global seismic phases at a variety of frequencies and polarizations. This paper presents filtered three-component stacks from broadband seismic recordings of both shallow and deep earthquakes. These images provide a guide to the relative visibility of the various seismic phase arrivals, and also yield empirical travel time curves for the average Earth response at different frequencies. We also produce a composite image, useful for educational purposes that combines the results from may of the individual stacks with varying colors to show the polarizations of the different wave types.
